This is part 4 of a 5 part series that covers creating content for the following social bookmarking sites.  The other parts will be released over the next few weeks so keep checking back.

Mixx

Mixx is a social bookmarking site that takes content from all over the web and organizes it into categories and popularity based on the Mixx community.   Use YourMixx to tailor the content categories, tags, specific users and groups, and they will deliver the top-rated content as chosen by you and people who share your passions.

One of the most appealing aspects of Mixx is the ability to build FOLLOWED backlinks to your site.  Unlike the majority of the popular social bookmarking sites, Mixx actually does not nofollow their links.  Another aspect that is appealing about Mixx, is that the bookmarking site is not as saturated as places like Digg and StumbleUpon.  This means that you have a much better chance of getting 1st page exposure for your content.

The community is dominated by males, between 25-45 years old, with a higher household income compared to Digg and StumbleUpon.

Content-Style

One thing that the Mixx community pride themselves on, is promoting quality websites and content. You will see that many of the posts and sites that make it to the front page are of high quality and value.

When you go to the front page of Mixx, you will notice that at the top of the page, they have a section for Top Photos.  So like many of the other social bookmarking sites, if you have quality photos on your site, they can do really well in Mixx.com

Just like every other social bookmarking site you need to use the best practices like compelling titles, good description, relevant tags, and appealing content. Since Mixx has separate sections for Photos and Videos, it may be another way to gain exposure in Mixx.

Topics for Content

Even though Mixx offers a wide-variety of topics that you can submit your content to, it is very clear as to the type of content the Mixx community enjoys.  Just take a look at the popular stories and you will notice content geared towards the following topics:

  • Business
  • World Events
  • Politics
  • Technology
  • Travel

Examples of Content That Went Viral on Mixx:

Good post Mark. Mixx is great. Everytime I forget about them I get reminded again. But funnily enough even though StumbleUpon is nofollow, they still generate significant traffic if follow your StumbleUpon guide. Great idea in creating this series, it's great.

StumbleUpon can def generate a ton of traffic. The only caveat with SU is the fact that you are driving traffic that is going to have a high bounce rate and low time on site. So they are not necessarily going to be as engaged with your content, as other referral sources. But nevertheless, an awesome traffic source.
